School of Product Design was founded in 2014. It is a secondary teaching unit founded on the basis of reintegrated former traditional dominant majors of Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Dyeing and Textile Design, etc. With the combination of beautifulness and functionality, of technology and creativity as its main principle, the school aims at training talents of design with good attainments of traditional Chinese culture and of art and literature, modern consciousness, interpersonal skills, good health and sound mind, and comprehensive abilities. The students should become application-oriented and research-oriented talents with a good understanding of the developments and prospects of the related fields of product design, preliminary scientific research ability, practical work ability, a good mastery of design methods and professional skills, ability of critical thinking and outstanding creative ability, and able to meet the requirements of contemporary and future social development and cultural ecology..

Three majors are offered at the school, Product Design, Fashion and Adornment Design, and Dyeing and Textile Design.

The major of Product Design (formerly the major of Industrial Design) was established in 1973. Therefore Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts is among the academies that offered this major the earliest in China. Its name was changed from Industrial Design to Product Design in 2013. This major aims to train application-oriented and research-oriented talents with "solid foundation, wide caliber, and high abilities", harmoniously developed “knowledge, ability and quality”, solid basic theoretical knowledge of industrial design and ability of product modeling, and able to be engaged in the work of design, management, scientific research or teaching at professional design departments, enterprises, institutions, etc.
